The Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative

Personalized eBook for Learning (PeBL)

Developing the next-generation of eBooks to create personalized, collaborative learning experiences.

Description

The PeBL project extends the functionality of eBooks, making them more interactive, adaptive, and capable of supporting social learning in connected, immersive, and personalized ways.

The PeBL Project provides an “Internet of Books” platform based on the EPUB 3 standard and xAPI specification. This extends the advantages of eBooks to make them more easily adopted by web-based platforms and to better support interactive, adaptive, and social learning in connected, immersive, and personalized ways. Products from this project will include a personalized learning environment with non-linear pathways, a competency-based TLA-enabled course on social engineering, a comment annotation tool, web-based immersive media, and real-time social media forums. This project will support the next iteration of the popular EPUB 3 specification by specifying how to create TLA-compliant extensions for new functionality that integrate xAPI to track and analyze user metrics within eBooks.

Major Deliverables

  • E-reader and UI enhancements, 508 compliance, and TLA support
  • Specification development for authoring tools, maturation of analytics, and prototyping dashboards
  • Support to transition to partners (ONR, NPS, USMC) and OPM.
